on the ground in saigon:

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

motorbikes hundreds of them
roar down the roads
little radios strapped onto pushbikes
belching cars
tourist buses, people shout
blinking lights, glaring ads
food carts selling beef bánh mì, best in town
hawkers handing you hats and sunglasses
they won’t go away,
i give them a dollar for nothing
beef pho stalls, a bowl a day keeps the migraine away
five-star hotels, lounge by the pool
you’re not here anymore
dingy hostels, i’ve done my share
parks with loudspeakers booming gym music,
people like doves dancing, i want to throw bread at them
stores selling imitation iphones, fake Nikes
war museums that tell sad stories
coffee shops with bad coffee
French colonial architecture, who doesn’t like those?
backstreets,
where everything happens
eighties music blaring from pubs, woah they still play that here?
tattoo parlors, no way would i get a tattoo there
cheap breakfast: coffee, baguette and jam
smelly canals, you’ve gotta have those
shopping malls
Ben Thanh market, if you are determined
pagodas, if you are a tourist
saigon river tours, if you are a tourist
who likes water
nah, go at least once
bodies everywhere
pushing pulling longing…

from the top floor it looks like anywhere.

  1. Thank you for reminding me of how much Saigon looks like many old cities in Indonesia. Been there only once, five years ago.
