when I’m seventy

how many tattoos
before I’ve said all
I need to say about me?
etched into my skin
definitions I don’t want
to forget.
when I’m seventy I won’t regret
having been inked,
even if wrinkled and faded,
they’re lost in the folds.
I’ll pull my skin tight
and there
I am.
I won’t ever be lost to myself.

  3. Skin makes an excellent canvas. Or so I’ve been told. (I want me a tattoo or two.)

    • I heard this comedian rant about tattoos and what idiots the people are that get them. Did they bother to think what the tattoos will look like when they’re old? I heard that comedians are smart but I guess this one was an outlier…

      • I was a cook on a sailing vessel for a chunk of time. Just about everyone had tattoos. This was way before they were popular with just about everyone. I also my daughters on board with me. They were children. Anytime we were in a port, and someone was taking my child off the boat….they would say “Yeah Yeah Mom…I know.”
And that “I know.” was to the warning to not bring my child back with a tattoo. Little did I know that there would come a time when tattoos would not only be popular but almost a rite of passage. Do those children/now middle age adults have tattoos? Yes, but not during on my watch!
        All my best to you!

  6. Never thought of tattoos like that.

  7. Remembering who you were … will you know who you are? I don’t need tattoos. I have scars.
